EPL Week 3 Review

The third round has strengthened the early case for a

Manchester City–Arsenal title race.
Both remain perfect on nine points, but Arsenal’s comeback against Chelsea was the more significant result for the forecasting model. Liverpool have also taken an important step forward, while Hull are emerging as the season’s early surprise.

Match week 3 Results

Ipswich vs Liverpool 0–2

Newcastle vs Bournemouth 2–2

Brentford vs Sunderland 1–1

Brighton vs Leeds 1–1

Fulham vs Crystal Palace 2–3

Manchester City vs Coventry 1–0

Nottingham Forest vs Tottenham 0–0

Hull vs Aston Villa 0–0

Everton vs Manchester United 2–2

Arsenal vs Chelsea  2–1.

1. Arsenal ↑ — Biggest Positive Mover

Chelsea scored almost immediately through Morgan Rogers, but Arsenal recovered to win 2–1, with Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard scoring. Arsenal demonstrated the ability to respond after falling behind against another
title contender and now have nine points from nine despite William Saliba’s continued absence.

Model judgement: Championship probability rises from
27% → 31%.

2. Manchester City → Still Slight Favourites

City beat Coventry 1–0, with Erling Haaland scoring again.
The scoreline was tighter than the model’s predicted 3–0, preventing a large
upgrade, but City remain the model favourite.

Title probability: 34% → 35%.

3. Liverpool

Liverpool recorded an encouraging 2–0 win at Ipswich.
Alexander Isak scored twice, while the clean sheet was particularly important
after two opening 2–2 draws.

Title: 11% → 12%.
Top four: 46% → 50%.

4. Chelsea

Chelsea’s attacking football remains impressive, but defensive control and
midfield balance remain concerns.

Title: 14% → 10%.
Top four: 51% → 47%.

5. Hull City ↑↑ — Surprise of the Season

Hull have seven points, three clean sheets and no goals conceded after three
matches. Their defensive organisation increasingly looks meaningful rather
than simply an early statistical anomaly.

Relegation probability: 22% → 12%.

6. Aston Villa ↓↓

Villa have no wins, one draw, two defeats and no goals.
Their attacking output is an early warning despite the small sample.

European qualification: 27% → 18%.
Relegation risk: 12% → 18%.

7. Tottenham

Tottenham drew 0–0 at Nottingham Forest and have zero wins, one point
and zero goals from three matches. Chance creation remains the major concern.

Title: 2.5% → 1.5%.
Top four: 25% → 18%.
Europe: 50% → 41%.

8. Manchester United ↓ Slightly

The 2–2 draw at Everton highlighted continuing defensive-control problems.

Top-four probability: 31% → 27%.

9. Sunderland Quietly Outperforming Expectations

Sunderland’s underlying attacking performance against Brentford was encouraging
and supports a modest survival upgrade.

Relegation probability: 24% → 20%.

10. Fulham — Early Crisis

Fulham have lost all three matches. Their 3–2 defeat to Crystal Palace
was particularly damaging after leading twice.

Relegation probability: 34% → 44%.

The major title-race absence remains William Saliba. Manchester City have concerns around Nico O’Reilly and Jérémy Doku, while Brentford captain Nathan Collins also requires monitoring.
